That means it will take a minimum of 8 to 12 weeks for them to write back to you and tell you whether your manuscript has been selected.

This is the only reason why they are in the third place, just that they haven’t been able to update themselves with changing times.

You might be wondering why they are in the 4th place and it is because of their exclusivity. I have created this list based on how easy it is to publish a book.

The publishing world should not be a closed industry where newcomers simply do not have the chance to enter but that is the case with this publisher.

Unless you have excellent connections you simply cannot expect to publish your book with them. Having said that, they provide excellent publishing services and they do everything that a typical traditional publisher does.

But in order to publish something with them, you need to get into the exclusive club with them and that is nearly impossible.

They have published some of the most well-known bestsellers and are often the choice for celebrities as well as political leaders.

But that is just about it because if you are an ordinary person then you can forget publishing something with Rupa Publications.

This is because they are strictly a traditional publishing house and it is impossible to self-publish with them.

They are also lacking in the services department and you can’t really make out anything if you visit their website and want to hire them for their services.

While they are a legacy publishing company with a good market presence but they are still lagging behind other publishers in the list.

Still, if you want to find Indian bestsellers that are doing incredibly well in the Indian market then you have to look at Rupa Publications.

7. Roli Books

Roli Books

Roli is among those publishers that are quite rare and quite unique. It is not because they do something extraordinary in terms of the process of publishing or their services.

But it is because of that choice of publication. This is probably one of the only publishing companies out there that publishes on different topics.

You can expect them to publish on everything from photography to art as well as cooking and much more. You can expect them to publish stories on fiction as well as non-fiction.

They do a very good job at publishing and they also have some of the best book cover designs out there because you can definitely recognize their books from a distance because of their unique style.

So you might be asking the question of why Roli Books being so down on the list. It is because they do not self-publish.

They only do traditional publishing but without the same network as well as distribution channels as legacy traditional publishers.

This means they are not only sacrificing opportunity but they are also sacrificing market reach in trying to be an exclusive publishing company.

But they definitely bring out some unique and good books.

Zubaan Publishers

On our number 8 spot, I have a very unique name because this is probably the only established and reputed feminist publishing house in India.

This makes it the pioneer of feminist publishing in India. The concept of feminist publishing is still very new in India and they are leading the way.

It is run by an all-women team and they do a very good job at publishing in topics that are rare to see.

While their operations were closed during the pandemic, they are active now and you can definitely check out all that they publish.

They are relatively small if we compare them to all the big names in self-publishing and traditional publishing and they only take in submissions and do traditional publishing.

They are on this list simply because they are doing something so unique that is rare to see not only in India but internationally.

You can visit their website and check out all their books and you will be quite surprised at the vast array of feminist topics.

Their shelves have also been graced by some of the most influential names in the world including the likes of Nelson Mandela to RK Narayan and much more.

A commoner can’t get their work published with Orient Paperbacks. You can still try to get your work published but it usually takes nearly 3 months for them to consider your manuscript.

New Delhi Publisher

And finally, I come to the 10th name on our list of the top 10 publishing houses in Delhi and if I am speaking of Delhi, it is impossible to miss New Delhi Publishers.

They might not be traditional publishers in the sense of the term because they do not publish fiction and non-fiction.

They mostly focus on educational books on different topics and they cover a large area of focus when it comes to educational material.

SIMPLEST TYPESETTING GUIDE TO DIY TYPESETTING FOR YOUR BOOK

Self-publishing is freedom and self-publishing is about doing everything that traditional publishers used to do by yourself. That includes everything from the proofreading to the editing but it also includes the prep work before publishing.

One of the most important things for that prep work is book formatting and print book typesetting. So, we will help you understand how to typeset your book.

We will tell you everything about book typesetting in this simple book typesetting guide so that you can be ready as a self-published author and do everything yourself.

We will tell you how to typeset your book with the help of a few important book typesetting tips that will transform your idea on typesetting best practices.

But before we do all that, you need to know typesetting basics. That is why let us understand what is typesetting in the first place.

What Exactly Is Typesetting?

Let us work you through the steps so that you might understand things better with a few questions.

Let’s say you are a writer and you have just finished writing the manuscript.

You have completed the editing process and you now have the perfect manuscript on your hands. You have also completed the book cover design and everything else.

All you need to do now is to print the book. Now here comes the question, Is the manuscript ready for printing?

Or do you need to arrange that text in the layout of the book and turn the text into individual pages with custom fonts, glyphs etc.?

Do you need to have the book page set up in order to get the book to the printing house? Then there you have your answer. Typesetting is arranging the book text into pages.

But you might be wondering why should you do that because Microsoft Word can do it for you.  But there is actually a lot that goes into page design for books not just an automatic arrangement of words ready for printing

Typesetting in short is basically when you need to arrange everything from the font to the letters as well as symbols as well as all the glyphs in an order so that it is ready for printing.

The page layout needs to be set in such a way that is pleasing to the readers and it is more of a science than art to get the perfect book typesetting.

In fact, this is such an important aspect of book printing that there are professionals out there doing just professional book formatting and they only do that and nothing else. It is a niche category of work in the publishing world.

So, what is the solution to book typesetting for beginner authors? Do you do it yourself or do you get professionals to do it?

Let us look at a few solutions that you have as a self-published author.

Book Typesetting Solutions for Self-Published Authors

Solution 1: The Professional Approach

The first solution is probably the simplest solution because it involves hiring the best professionals in the industry who are professional typesetters.

They will do the job for you at a record speed and you will get one of the best professional high-quality outcomes out of it.

You can tell the professionals about your vision and they will truly make sure your vision is realised but the only problem with this is that it is expensive. It does not make sense to spend money on professionals if you are self-publishing.

Solution 2: The Freelance Approach

The second thing you can do will be quite good for your pocket because we are talking about hiring freelancers instead of professionals.

You can hire freelancers from freelancing websites like Upwork or Fiverr and they will also do it decent job of it.

The best thing about this approach is that it will cost a fraction of what professionals will ask for.  But the problem with this approach is that you might get a good outcome only if you are lucky.

Solution 3: The Self-publisher Approach

Since you are self-publishing your book this is the best possible way to do your book typesetting and it is to take matters into your own hands and do it yourself.

You might need to learn everything about typesetting from the basics to the do’s and don’ts and much more.

But that is why we are here with this blog so that you can actually execute the third solution with perfection.

Simple Book Typesetting Tips For Beginner Authors

Choose The Best Typesetting Software

The first thing to do is to get a good typesetting software because without the software things will become even more difficult and complicated for a beginner.

There are so many software options to choose from and we are going to tell you a few options so that you can choose your pick.

Adobe InDesign

If you want to use the absolute best software that actual typesetting professionals use then this is the best option for you but it might be expensive for you. There is a learning curve to it as well but YouTube will fix that.

Scribus

If you want a free and open-source option then this is it. You can use it on Mac or Windows or even Linux if you want.

QuarkXPress

If you want an alternative professional option that is used by professional typesetters then this is it but it is going to cost you a bit. The quality is phenomenal though.

Affinity Publisher 2

If you want a paid option that is affordable then this is it because Affinity is a fraction of what it costs to get Adobe InDesign or QuarkXPress.

Follow A Few Simple Cardinal Tips for Typesetting

Now that you know what kind of software to use let us look at some of the few cardinal tips which are more like tips that will help you a lot with typesetting.

Respect The Empty Spaces

When we talk about empty spaces we call them negative spaces professionally. These are the spaces that do not contain any content or text. The spaces between paragraphs etc.

They are empty spaces that kind of form the boundary for the text and you must make sure to utilise these negative species so that they highlight the content even more.

Keep Trim in Mind

You must understand that the whole page does not go into printing because part of the page is cut so that things look neat and so that the book is the perfect size.

That is why when you create your page typeset you must always keep the trim in mind and leave that space empty because that will be cut off and discarded after print.

This is something very important because if you do not do that then part of your text might get cut off if you don’t have empty space in the form of trim.

Orphans, Widows and Word Stacks

If you are not into typesetting then this is probably the first time you have heard of this but you might have noticed these eye sores without knowing their names.

Word stacks are words that unintentionally line up consecutively in rows and orphans are the last line of the page that is the start of a new paragraph, the rest of the paragraph being on the next page. It looks abrupt and incomplete.

Widows are the last line of a paragraph at the start of a new page. They also look incomplete and abrupt just like orphans.

You can Google what they look like but the thing is that they look bad and the page formatting looks unprofessional so you should keep them in mind and make changes so that they don’t happen.

Choose the Justified Alignment

The Justified alignment is the most popular type of alignment where the left side and the right side of the text are parallel with the margin with equal spaces.

They make the page look professional and have a very nice and formal look to them. You don’t have to have the most professional typesetter out there to do this because this is something basic and you can even do it in Microsoft Word.

Do Some Font Research

We can of course tell you which font to use for the type of book and which font to avoid but that won’t be a learning experience.

The simplest thing you can do is to find out books that are similar to your book and are of a similar genre and find out what kind of font they are using.

If the font is free to use and does not need a licence then you can use that font or you can use something similar. That will save you a lot of time and it will also make the work look professional.

Try Using Unique Special Characters

If you want to bring a little bit of personality to a very formal page layout then you can use unique characters for special characters.

But make sure to get licences for those artistic question marks and exclamation marks and those special characters. Never forget licenses for anything you use in your book.

We would suggest you not to use the default special characters that come with the font and you now know a simple way to make the text pop.

Try Using Bits of Creativity

You might be using the Justified alignment and you might be using a very formal font and a very conservative page layout for your typesetting.

But if you want to bring a little bit of uniqueness to the character of the entire book then you can utilise creativity in the form of page titles and page numbers and you can use artistic fonts for them.

That will make sure that you have a perfect balance between formal and creative so that the page layout has a little bit of unique character to it.

Make Sure Things Are Consistent

Consistency might not be at the top of your mind because it is something we take for granted but you can lose track of consistency if you are doing it yourself.

That is why we are keeping this point so that we can just remind you to make sure that everything that you do on the first page of the manuscript should be the same on the last page.

This means you should utilise the same font throughout the manuscript and the font size should also be the same. Accordingly, if you use a different font for the special characters then you should make sure that the same font is used throughout the manuscript.

Apart from that, you must make sure that consistency is utilised throughout the margins and negative spaces and text alignment etc.

These were some of the basic but very important tips that will help you take care of your typesetting if you want to self-publish your book do the typesetting yourself.

But if you feel as if typesetting is complicated then you are right because typesetting is definitely complicated and things can go wrong if you are doing it yourself.

MOBI VS EPUB – WHAT SHOULD YOU CHOOSE FOR YOUR EBOOK?

Today we have something very interesting for you because we are going to talk about two of the most significant eBook file types and eBook formats and help you understand which format of eBook is the best for you.

This blog is for everyone who wants to use the file format for reading as well as self-publishing their ebook.

Today we are essentially going to compare Kindle vs. EPUB because we will compare Mobi vs. EPUB. And when we talk about Mobi we are essentially talking about the Amazon Kindle format which is currently AZW3 based on Mobi.

We are going to compare Mobi advantages with EPUB advantages and talk about the benefits of these two digital publishing formats.

We will also compare them on multiple parameters such as eBook conversion as well as compatibility with eBook readers and so much more. We will check out things like Mobi vs. EPUB readability etc.

Let us start by understanding each of these two formats.

What Exactly Is EPUB?

Epub

EPUB or electronic publication is an open source ebook format that is probably one of the most widely recognised ebook formats in the world.

Nearly every kind of device supports EPUB and it does not come with any DRM by default, although DRM can be added as well. EPUB is actually based on HTML as well as CSS which makes it so flexible.

Everything from Android to iOS has EPUB compatibility and since it is open source and easy to use that is why it is often considered a default in the eBook industry.

EPUB has a lot of features that are very helpful and simple. EPUB can automatically adjust to the size of the device and it can even have images and things like text to speak etc.

The newest version of EPUB can also support audio and videos. It is essentially a good format for ebooks and the ebook publishing industry loves it.

So, What Is Mobi?

Mobi

Now that we know what is EPUB let us understand what is Mobi. Mobi(Mobipocket) is not an open-source software because it is a proprietary software created by Mobipocket which was acquired by Amazon in 2005 for its devices, especially the Kindle.

While Mobi is currently not in use but it was used exclusively by Amazon for its eBooks and it was replaced by AZW3 in 2022.

You might consider Mobi as dead but AZW3 is basically Mobi and it is very much similar to Mobi.

So, How Are Mobi and EPUB Different?

epub or mobi

The Type of Format They Are

If we have to start with the differences between these two formats then we have to talk about what are they based on. EPUB is based on HTML and CSS and if you are into web development then you will know that web pages are also of the same thing.

But when we talk about Mobi, it is a proprietary file format that was created by Mobipocket and was later acquired by Amazon.

While you can get to see EPUB on nearly every ebook reader and ebook platform but you will exclusively see Mobi or the current version of Mobi, AZW3, on Amazon devices like Kindles.

Even if you do not have a Kindle and you want to read books on Amazon then you can only download them with the help of the Kindle app on your smartphone and read them on that app.

You can’t make copies of that file and it is DRM encrypted. We will talk more about that at a later point.

Its Use Case in The Industry

EPUB is nearly used by everyone in the industry and you can expect platforms like Apple as well as Kobo and even Google Play Books and Nook to use EPUB.

It is generally accepted and loved by all ebook platforms and is supported by most ebook readers apart from Kindle.

But if you have to talk about Mobi then it is proprietary which means you can only access Mobi files with the help of Amazon’s own software which is the Kindle software.

If you have a Kindle and you read ebooks on that then that is stored exclusively in the Mobi file system or the AZW3 file format but never on EPUB.

This means while Mobi is compatible with your device but you will need Amazon’s own software to access it.

Its Editing Capabilities

When we talk about editing capabilities, EPUB is a lot easier to edit because it is based on HTML and if you have some experience with HTML then it can be very easy for you.

You can get a lot of tools online that will just do that trick and you don’t even need any proprietary tools because there are good free tools to edit EPUB.

However when we come to the topic of Mobi then things can become complicated because you might run into a lot of restrictions if you want to edit Mobi files, especially with a DRM.

This is because it is a proprietary software and Amazon simply does not want everyone to have the tools to edit Mobi files to prevent piracy.

Encryption And Digital Rights Management(DRM)

When we come to the topic of Digital Rights Management(DRM) we must understand that both of these file types are capable of having encryption and DRM that restricts copying and changes to the file.

But you will not see a lot of DRM implementation when it comes to EPUB simply because it is not associated with a single system.

But when we talk about DRM, Mobi actively utilises DRM which is just a way for Amazon to protect its purchases so that the ebooks and everything else on the Amazon store cannot be copied for free.

Their Features, Look And Feel

If you want formatting options for the readers then EPUB is the answer because Mobi does not have all the features that modern readers need and are used to.

When we say modern readers we mean that Mobi is kind of outdated when it comes to features and functionality because it does not provide a lot of flexibility.

While general features are still there but you can’t expect a lot of customisation and if you bring up the topic of multimedia then Mobi does not stand a chance because it does not support it.

So, What Should You Consider for Your eBook?

The answer to this is actually quite simple because nowadays in 2023 you do not really need to decide on what you want to do and choosing the perfect ebook format is not a hard thing.

What you need to do is simply submit your manuscript in any format that you want because the ebook platform is just going to take just the text.

If you want you can even submit and upload your manuscript in PDF format and if you want you can even submit your manuscript in a Word file.

What will happen is that your manuscript, which is not yet an ebook, will get converted to the format depending upon the platform you are in.

Let us walk you through some of the formats used by different ebook platforms.

Apple Books

Apple Books

When it comes to Apple books, you can expect EPUB because it is widely used. They also use their proprietary format called the iBooks format or IBA. Apart from that you can also expect Apple Books to support PDF files.

Amazon Kindle

Amazon Kindle

When it comes to Amazon, you are not going to find EPUB files because Amazon mostly utilises its AZW3 format which is based on Mobi in its latest form. You can also expect to see other formats such as the KFX formats all it is rare.

Amazon also has a service where you can mail files in nearly any format and it will convert them to Mobi and transfer them to your Kindle.

Google Play Books

Google Play Books

Google Play Books has a simple list of formats which is EPUB as well as PDF. You can even find image formats such as PNG and other formats when it comes to their comics.

Most of the other places such as Barnes & Noble Nook can recognize EPUB and most other places will definitely have EPUB and some will also have Mobi.

So, all you need to do is to upload your file in your desired format and the platform is going to convert it to their desired format most of the time.

And if you are still not sure what kind of format you need to choose for your ebook and how ebook formats work then you do not need to worry because we are here for you.Ebook PublishingWe are Orange Publishers and we are the fastest-growing publishing company in India and we not only print and publish paperbacks but we also do ebooks and audiobooks.

Common Ebook Format FAQs

Which is better EPUB or MOBI?

The answer to this depends on what you consider better because if you consider better as working properly then both of these formats are equally good enough and do a proper job.

But if you consider it better as a lot of features then EPUB has a lot more features than Mobi and EPUB has a lot of control, additionally, EPUB is open source which means you can get a lot of tools to make edits and change things.

EPUB is also supported by nearly all ebook platforms except Amazon Kindle. But if you just want text then both of these platforms are good enough.

Does Kindle accept MOBI?

Amazon Kindle currently uses the AZW3 format. It is the current variant based on the original Mobi format which was in use up until 2022.

This means that Kindle will not only accept Mobi but your Mobi file will work in your Kindle without any issues because the current Amazon format and Mobi are quite similar and your Mobi file will work flawlessly.

You will be able to read your ebook and you will be able to have nearly all the controls that are possible on a Kindle without any issues.

Is EPUB still used?

It is still used and it is probably the most popular format among all ebook formats in the world simply because of its level of accessibility. It is an open source format and nearly all ebook platforms use it.

It is easy to edit and has a lot of features and customization as well as good cross-platform compatibility.  It supports reflowable text and it is basically considered as a standard in the world of ebooks.

This means that if you come anywhere close to any ebook platform or ebook reader that is not Amazon or Kindle then you will definitely come across EPUB because it is just an industry standard.

It supports multimedia content and that is definitely a plus.

Does Kindle accept EPUB?

The answer to this is complicated because Kindle does not have native support for EPUB  files but that does not mean you can’t transfer your EPUB file to your Kindle tablet.

This is because Amazon has something called the conversion service where you mail your EPUB file to your Kindle email address and Amazon will automatically convert it for you.

If you do not want to use that then you can utilise open-source FREE softwares readily available to convert your files to Mobi or AZW3. You can even do that online and a simple Google search will help you find plenty of online converters.

WHY DO BEST-SELLING AUTHORS EVEN SELF-PUBLISH?

Self-publishing is slowly but surely overtaking the traditional publishing market and more authors are choosing self-publishing over the traditional route in order to publish their work.

It is estimated that more than 90% of authors self-publish and their important reasons why this is the case.

What is even more shocking is that best-selling authors are choosing to self-publish more of their work than go through the traditional route of publishing. So, why do best-selling authors choose to self-publish?

We are going to answer this exact question with a lot of facts so that you might understand why self-publishing is actually the future. We will help you understand if self-publishing is good for best-selling authors, then it might also be definitely the best option for you.

So, let us look at all the reasons why best-selling authors choose to self-publish their work.

Here Is Why Best-Selling Authors Self-Publish Their Work

More Minute Control Over the Art

Traditional publishing is good and it is relatively less risky to publish traditionally rather than invest your own money and self-publish your own work.

But best-selling authors choose self-publishing whether it is for e-books, paperbacks or audiobooks and one of the most important reasons for that is more creative control over what they publish.

Traditional publishing is an authority which means when you publish your novel traditionally, you give some of your rights to that traditional publisher.

This means that they can hold on to rights which is not complete freedom. And since they are investing in the book, they have quite a lot of authority and say about the book.

This means they can also have their opinions and their desires regarding the content of the book. It is quite often the case that traditional publishers might ask the author to change certain parts of the manuscript for various reasons.

While a new author might be happy to comply with that but a best-selling author simply does not need to follow the authority of the traditional publisher.

That is the very reason why choose to self-publish their work so that they can have more creative control over the art and everything that goes into the book.

Freedom In Topic Selection

When you traditionally publish your book, you need to write on genres and topics that are actually prescribed by the traditional publishing house.

This is because the traditional publisher only needs books on topics and genres they feel will make a profit. They can limit your topic selection.

The traditional publishing house might also select topics based on several other factors. For example, they might have a popular book in a particular genre and they don’t want competition in that same genre and might reject your book for that reason.

But if you want to have total freedom in what you choose to write then self-publishing is the only way to do it and best-selling authors definitely understand that.

While traditional publishers might not be willing to work with you if you do not write on the topics they favour, that is not the case with self-publishing.

With self-publishing, you are the investor and you are the publisher which means you get to write on anything and everything you want provided it is not something illegal.

You get to have complete control about choosing the topic and no one is simply going to stop you from doing that.

Better From the Point of View of Royalties

Every author has the ultimate goal of sustaining their lifestyle and their livelihood with money earned from their books.

When it comes to best-sellers, they are certainly dependent on the profits and royalties their books make in order to make a living since we are now in the professional category.

That is why royalty is the primary source of income for best-selling authors. That is also why if best-selling authors can get better royalties somewhere else rather than traditional publishers, then they will definitely prefer that.

And the only place where you can get better royalties is if you self-publish your book.

This is because if someone chooses to traditionally publish their book then they can expect a royalty of not more than 20% in the case of bestsellers. New authors can expect somewhere around 10%.

The majority of the profit is taken up by the traditional publisher since they are investing, self-publishing is completely different when it comes to royalty percentages.

When the author chooses to self-publish their work, they can expect at least a 50% royalty and we are not even talking about best-sellers.

If bestsellers can come up with exclusive deals with self-publishing platforms, then they can even expect royalties as high as 70% to 80%.

And since they are best-sellers, they no longer require the distribution channels of traditional publishers and that is why they can care less about traditional publishers and go independent.

A Lot Faster Publishing Timeline

You might support traditional publishing or you might support self-publishing but irrespective of that, we all can come together and agree that traditional publishing is inefficient.

This is because traditional publishers are not just working with a single author at a given time whether they are bestsellers or not. A traditional publisher always has their hands full of work.

This means that even if they dedicate a lot of the workforce towards the best-selling author’s manuscript, it would still take a lot of time to go through the entire prep process before publication.

But with self-publishing, the author does all that themselves. The author may even have extra hands to do a lot of the prep work that would take a lot of time for traditional publishers.

The best-selling author will dedicate all their time and resources to a single manuscript which means it is going to be ready for publication months in advance compared to traditional publishing.

That is why this is a huge positive for self-publishing because the author takes all the responsibility themselves. The only considerable time in the entire process is the printing process.

This also means that the book will hit the shelves and all the online platforms much quicker and start earning money for the author. Time is money for everyone and the author depends on that money for a livelihood and that is why they choose self-publishing.

Publishing a book is not just about getting the book into bookstores but it is also about promotion and that is very important in the case of best-selling authors.

This is because best-selling authors are a brand themselves and that is why the quicker they are able to get their work published the more they are able to concentrate on promotions.

That is simply unimaginable with traditional publishing because with traditional publishing the marketing of the book is totally dependent on the publisher and not the author.

No Long-Term Harsh Contract

One of the negatives of traditional publishing is that whenever you publish your work with a traditional publisher you sign an exclusivity contract.

This means you do not hold all the rights to your book and the publishing company holds the rights to publish the book.

This fact does not change whether you are a best-selling author or you are just starting out in your authorship career.

These contracts can be very harsh and sometimes these contracts can go on for decades or as long as the copyright is valid which might vary depending upon your country.

That is why best-selling authors do not need that kind of a compromise to freedom because they are already popular and they are themselves holding their own market.

That is my best-selling authors do not go the traditional route and self-publish their own work after they gain certain popularity and readership.

They registered the book in their own name and ISBN. This means they have the exclusive rights to publish their work anywhere they want and any platform they want.

This is quite the freedom if you compare it to signing exclusive rights of publication with a traditional publishing house.

It Is an Overall Positive Experience

Self-publishing is an overall positive experience compared to traditional publishing and we are not just talking about it from the perspective of best-selling authors but any author.

The thing about traditional publishing is that if any author wants to get their book published then they might get rejected a lot.

This is very bad for the morale of the author and it is because of this that many others might never even choose to publish their work.

Even if that author is a best-selling author, they might have to wait for their work to get reviewed which is not really the best thing to do with best-selling authors.

Then again, they are faced with the question of how many books can they actually sell which is in a way disrespectful to the best-selling author.

Traditional publishing was good for the time being because it was the only option available to authors but self-publishing is actually perfect for the times we are in now.

We are in a digital age and that means everything needs to be efficient and fast and that is why best-selling authors simply do not want to go through the hassle of traditional lines.

They do not want to wait for underpaid interns to review their masterpieces and they simply want to do it on their own which is only possible with self-publishing.

An Overall Better Experience in Terms of Freedom

In order to understand this, we must understand book revisions and new editions. They are extremely difficult with traditional publishing.

A book is revised when the author brings in new changes if they stumble upon new information and they can even bring in new chapters and sections to the book without changing anything.

Doing that in the case of traditional publishing is like going through the publishing process all over again which is just as time-consuming as the last time.

But if the author wants to do it with self-publishing, then they just have to release a new version with the necessary changes and the new additions.

They just have to promote the fact that they have a new version available and it is just as simple as that and that is unimaginable in the case of traditional publishing.

Even if the author does not want to revise the text but they simply change the book cover then they can do it with complete freedom when it comes to self-publishing.

Perhaps the author wants to create a new book cover or a new book jacket with critical reviews as well as awards the book has won as well as copies sold then it is very easy with self-publishing.

Doing the same thing is cumbersome with traditional publishing and would require a hundred approvals from all levels.

There are so many other reasons why best-selling authors are choosing self-publishing over traditional publishing. Traditional publishing is definitely reliable, but just not up to date with current times.

And if you are looking for the reliability of traditional publishing with the benefits of self-publishing then we are here for you.

Common Self-Publishing FAQs

Why do authors self-publish?

There are multiple reasons why authors self-publish and one of the reasons might be that there is no need for waiting to get accepted and selected which is the case with traditional publishing.

If an author chooses to self-publish then they do not have to wait for anybody to approve their work and they can just go ahead with the publishing themselves.

Speaking of publishing, with self-publishing, authors get complete freedom and control of their work and they do not need to listen to any requests for changing the manuscript. This is sometimes the case with traditional publishing.

The royalty structure is also quite good in the case of self-publishing because in self-publishing the author is also the publisher and that is why they get to keep most of the profits.

Why self-publishing is a good idea?

Self-publishing is a good idea because of the level of freedom you are going to get and while you need to invest in your own book but you get to be the final authority on the book.

With self-publishing you also get to keep most of the profits which is not the case with traditional publishing and the royalty structure is much better with self-publishing.

With self-publishing you also get freedom and you are not bound by any exclusive rights agreements or contracts and you can publish your book on any platform you want.

These are just a few of the multiple positive reasons why self-publishing is not only a good idea but a good alternative to traditional publishing.

Is self-publishing a good option?

Self-publishing is a good option for everyone because you get to invest as much as you want and if you have a smaller budget, you can publish a small number of copies and vice versa.

Self-publishing is actually a better option than traditional publishing because with self-publishing you get to have complete control over the publication as well as the distribution of your book.

While traditional publishing was the best simply because of the distribution channels but that is not the case nowadays because you have excellent online platforms to sell your book and you do not need to worry about distribution.

That is why self-publishing is a good option for best-selling authors too because they get to publish according to their budget and if you are new you get to publish according to your budget. On top of that, you get to keep most of the profit.

Are self-published authors successful?

We can think of a hundred names of some of the most successful self-published authors to establish the fact that self-published authors are successful but we are just going to take one name which will settle the question.

Paulo Coelho. Yes, he self-publishes his works and this will give you an idea of how successful self-published authors can be.

This is because authors actually rely on royalties and profits for a living and that is their permanent income and self-publishing offers them better profits and better freedom.

CONTROL YOUR SELF-PUBLISHING COSTS EFFECTIVELY

Self-publishing can get expensive especially if you are just starting out and you only have limited funds for your book.

That is why we present you this blog so that you can effectively know how to control self-publishing costs so that you can finally fulfil your dream of becoming a published author.

In our quest to understand how to save self-publishing costs, we are going to look at the different parameters of self-publishing and most importantly why does it cost and where does it cost.

We will find out the cost of self-publishing a book and which areas are the most expensive and where you can cut costs effectively.

We will essentially learn self-publishing cost management.

Let us start with the things that increase your book publishing costs

Things That Give Rise to Higher Self-Publishing Costs

The Type of Book You Want to Publish

One of the most important factors that will dictate the cost of publishing is going to be the type of book.

When we talk about the type of book, we are going to divide it between the genre of the book as well as the medium in which you want to publish the book.

Genre Of the Book

The genre of the book will dictate how much it is going to cost. If you want to publish a children’s book then you do not have to publish a lot of pages and words and the production cost will be low.

But then again, the children’s book might have pictures and extensive use of colour which might make it even more costly than a novel with simple printing and words.

That is why you must always keep genre in mind if you want to plan a budget-friendly self-publishing for your book.

Medium For Publishing the Book

The second thing you must keep in mind for the best self-publishing financial planning is the medium of the book. This is very simple to understand.

Publishing has different kinds of costs associated with it and the biggest chunk goes to the production of the book.

If you want to produce copies of the book in paperback then the cost of the paper and the printing will add up. If you want to print it in hardback then the cost is going to be even greater.

But if you want to publish the book as an eBook then there are no costs associated with creating the book and creating copies of the book. That is the case with any digital medium apart from audiobooks, they have high initial costs.

The Size of The Book

The length and the size of the book is also a big factor when it comes to cost-effective book publishing.

We are not just talking about having to print a bigger book will cost more as there are a lot of other expenses associated with a bigger book.

A bigger book will require more editing time and more proofreading in order to get the final draft.

Then there comes the issue of printing the book because printing can take up a lot of the budget and it also depends on the quality of the paper and the kind of print you want to have.

The Situation of The Book

The more things you give the self-publishing company to do the more you are going to spend.  That is why if you reach the doorsteps of the company with a complete manuscript then it is only going to cost you to print the book.

However, if you bring the self-publishing company a rough draft then they will have to employ editors and proofreaders to do the final editing.

If you already have the illustrations then all you need to do is to tell them to place it in the book but if you do not have illustrations then the company needs to get their own artist to do the work.

That is also the case when it comes to the book cover as well as the book layout.

The simple matter of the fact is if you are really interested in cutting self-publishing costs then you need to do most of the heavy lifting.

The Self-Publishing Company

And we come to the final piece of the puzzle of minimizing self-publishing expenses. If you want to minimise self-publishing costs then you need the self-publishing company to provide you with affordable plans.

This is going to be the final leg of the journey for affordable self-publishing strategies.

There are thousands of self-publishing companies all over the world and most of them are not going to be affordable. If you find someone affordable then they are most probably new and do not have the quality you need.

That is where we come in because we have decades worth of experience and we bring affordability into the mix. We are not just providing a service; we are fulfilling dreams for authors and that is the simple reason why we are affordable.

Here Are the Approximate Costs of Self-Publishing A Book

Cover Design and Illustrations

We are going to start the approximate costs by telling you that one of the most important things you must plan is the cover design and illustrations.

While it is impossible to tell you an average figure because every data is confidential in the self-publishing industry but we can give you an estimation.

If you want the best kind of cover design then you can expect to spend something between ₹5,000 and ₹10,000.

If you do not want to spend that kind of money with the self-publishing company then you can even get a friend to do it for free.

If you want it to be even more affordable and self-sustaining then you can try the cover design by yourself, but we cannot say the same for the illustrations.

Illustrations can be a bit of a luxury for certain kinds of books but it is in necessity for other kinds of books such as children’s books. That is why you can expect to spend a lot of money on illustrations if you expect good quality.

Editor And Proofreader

One of the other areas where authors spend money is they usually hire editors and proofreaders because they usually reach the self-publishing company with a rough draft.

It is because they might not have the time to do the editing or they might not have the experience to do it and they want a professional to do it.

While it is impossible to tell you a figure that is an average for the industry but editing and proofreading services are usually included within the publishing package of the self-publishing company.

It all depends on how much work it is for the editor and proofreader. If you bring a final draft then you do not even need an editor or you need minor changes. In that case, the cost is negligible.

But if you bring a rough draft then you can expect added costs. You can expect something like ₹10,000 as editor charges.

Printing

We are not going to talk about the printing cost because it is impractical to bring out an average because there are so many types of books and so many genres.

However, the printing cost might be 20% to 30% of the MRP. This will give you an idea of what it costs to print the book based on the final price of the book in the market.

Copyright And ISBN

It is very easy to put a simple figure amount on the costs associated with copyright and International Standard Book Number (ISBN) and it is quite straightforward in India.

If you want to copyright any artistic work that is literary in nature then you are only going to need to spend ₹500. All you need to do is to file an application and you can very well do that online with a few important details.

And if you want to get an ISBN then it is free in India. All you need to do is apply for that through the Raja Rammohun Roy National Agency (RRRNA).

They deal with everything related to the ISBN and you will have your number within 50 days. It usually takes less than a month to get an ISBN for your book.

Distribution Costs

When it comes to distribution, it all depends on how you want to distribute the book because if you want to distribute it online through different platforms then they have their own charges.

If you want to distribute it through bookstores then again, they might have different charges and we do not want to take names on what charges they levy and compare them.

It is up to you on which channel or distribution you want to take and you must also keep your budget in mind when you do it.

Formatting The Book

When we talk about book formatting, it is usually a professional process that requires a skilled person to do it.

You might learn how to do it but it might not be enough because the self-publishing company might want it done by their own people. This is because it will help with the printing process and the layout.

But you do not need to worry because this is a complimentary service that comes with the self-publishing plan. This is one of the rudimentary elements of book publishing and that is why it is usually added in the plan.

Book Marketing

Book marketing is something that is totally up to you and we do not want to put a cost on it because it might cost you money or it might cost you time or both.

If you have time in your hands and experience then you can do social media marketing and while you can do it for free but you will need a lot of time and patience for it.

And if you feel like spending money on marketing then there is no upper limit because you can spend as much as you want on your book.

It is so easy to send money on marketing because all you need is promotional material and you can market your stuff online on different platforms.

You can even do physical marketing by contacting bookstores and doing deals with them.

Audiobook Making

And now we come to audiobook creation costs. It can cost money to create audiobooks and if you want to create an audiobook for your book then you need to add a few zeros to your budget.

This is because creating an audiobook is a difficult process that requires a lot of professionals such as sound engineers and voice artists. Along with that you also need a director as well as an audio studio.

Then you need to coordinate all of that and also keep your budget in mind. Audiobooks are very effective but they are still in the category of luxury because you do not definitely need to do it, you can do it if you want.

It can cost a few thousand to a few lakhs to do it in India and even more if you want the voice artist to be someone famous. If you want Amitabh Bachchan to do it then we are talking in crores.

So, How Do You Save Money on Self-Publishing?

Try Doing Most by Yourself

The best tip that we can give you is that you should try to do everything by yourself which includes doing most of the editing and providing the self-publishing company with the final draft.

It also includes doing the book cover design yourself and also doing the formatting yourself.  Along with that you must also keep marketing in mind and try to do it yourself to save the most money.

Apart from that you must have a clear idea and structure about how you want to move ahead with the book because if you have good planning, you will also be able to stick to that budget.

Try Going with Reputable and Pioneer Self-Publishing Companies
